A detailed study of the ci poetry of Su Shi (1036–1101), the best known author of the ci poetry (詞) in the Song Dynasty. The lectures will consider the individual achievement of the poet. They try to illuminate both internal sensible and sentimental world of Su Shi and the aesthetics embodied in ci poetry. Students taking these lectures are expected to demonstrate a knowledge of the ci poetry covered and a general ability to describe ci poetic styles.
This series of five lectures will be taught in Chinese.

The Sciences in Late Imperial China: Tradition and Circulation

This series of four lectures proposes an introduction to some of the history of science in China, focusing mainly on the late imperial period. While we now have a good view of some important features of the Chinese scientific and technological tradition, I will also turn to the location of knowledge and know-how in Chinese society and to its transmission across both time and space.

Japan ruled Taiwan for fifty years (1895–1945). The main theme of the CCK 2010 lecture series is about Taiwan under Japanese rule. Prof. Ts’ai will discuss about how a combination of governance technology and socio-political grafting was able to shape the Japanese bureaucracy into a disciplined tool of social control. It is a study of colonial engineering. She approaches this issue by analyzing the main institutions through which Taiwan was governed.
